STEREOTYPE STRAITJACKETS:

Images of Gender and Sexuality

an interactive theatre performance / community dialogue
featuring the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble.

"Just try to act normal, please"
"Look at her – she must be a lesbian."
"Do you think those two are…together?"
"Why do you dress like that?"
"No way anyone that tough could be gay."
"You're not a real woman."
"Too cute to be straight!"

All of us deal with stereotypes around sexual orientation and gender identity – what we are, what we aren't, what other people think we
should be. Some of these images fit us like a glove; others fit us like a straitjacket. Whether we're trying to blend in or break free, we deal with these stereotypes and assumptions constantly. For this performance, we are inviting not only members of the GLBTQ
community (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer), but also our significant others, families, friends, and allies. Together we will explore the different stereotypes each of us confront, and the
ways those images affect how we deal with ourselves and each other.

As interpreted by the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble, audience stories, struggles, successes, and dreams for the future will be
brought to life through physical imagery and improvisation. The audience will ultimately be invited onstage in order to actively explore solutions to the complex questions raised. It can literally be a rehearsal for the future in which audience "spect-actors" take action towards creating the kind of world they want. This unique process of using theater as community dialogue can be playful, intense, hilarious, deeply moving, and enlightening. Audiences are frequently left with richer awareness as well as a greater belief in their ability to effect change in their own lives. Come share your stories, hear the stories of others, and explore how we can become more effective allies to one another.
