CRAFTING COMMUNITY:
Creating a Just & Joyous Port Townsend for All

an interactive theatre performance / community dialogue
featuring the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble.

With special guests, Laurence Cole & the PT Songlines Choir.

You have discussed “community” in the cafes. You have talked “justice” in town meetings. Now people of all ages are invited to explore issues of importance using the uniquely effective and playful approach of participatory theatre. What is your vision for Port Townsend? How can we co-exist in a way that works for everyone considering our differences: age, gender, ethnicity, ability, class, and more. What are our successes and what are the obstacles that prevent our community from being a healthy, just, and joyous place for all people?

This one-time community wide event is a fundraiser for Poetic Justice to help this local troupe continue its free community service programs. Donations are gratefully appreciated; no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Now in its 5th season, the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble is a multi-generational troupe (currently ages 16-79) of local actor /activists who use interactive theatre as a tool for awareness and social change. Free public performances this season have included “Flying or Dying” at the Boiler Room exploring substance abuse, “Cracks in the Rainbow” and “Stereotype Straightjackets” exploring gender and sexual orientation issues. The troupe has also done a series of private performances this season for youth at PT High School and Jefferson Co. Health Department’s “Peer-In” youth support group and for assisted living elder residents at Victoria House among others.

The ensemble is prepared to work with any issue or population and offers itself as a free service to local groups in need, particularly those struggling with issues of marginalization.

How does Poetic Justice work? We come with nothing scripted or prepared except a few theatrical devices meant to draw out and reflect the truth and wisdom of people in the room. Audience stories, struggles, successes, and dreams for the future will be brought to life through physical imagery and improvisation. The audience will ultimately be invited onstage in order to actively explore solutions to the complex questions raised. It can literally be a rehearsal for the future in which audience “spect-actors” take action towards creating the kind of world they want. Audiences are frequently left with richer awareness as well as a greater belief in their ability to effect change in their own lives.

Joining Poetic Justice on May 12th will be the PT Songlines Choir, under the musical direction of Laurence Cole. Formed in late 2006, this high-spirited choral group weaves infectious harmonies around original music and lyrics written by longtime community member, Cole, plus songs crafted around the timeless poetry of Rumi, Hafiz, and others. Frequently inviting audience participation, PT Songlines music connects people by spreading joy as well as the invitation to live more consciously and compassionately with each other on the earth.

This unique event will be a place for story sharing, deep learning, and celebration, as well as a way for the community to take action and attempt to re-invent itself. Through the playful power of theatre and music, Port Townsend community members can truly make a difference. As Poetic Justice sometimes says, “Change the world and have a good time doing it!” This will be a family friendly event; all ages are invited and welcome. What is your vision for Port Townsend?
